The hosts will kick off their festival campaign with a match against Parktown Boys’ on Saturday.
Parktown have won four of their seven games so far this season, against Fourways (64-5), St John’s (31-25), Italy’s Viadana (39-12), and Northwood (36-24). Grey High have lost only two of theirs, going down in their Premier Interschools fixture against Paul Roos (36-21) and the following week against Daniel Pienaar (24-20). They’ve taken victories from matches against Stirling (50-0), Westville (29-6), Bishops (44-0), Michaelhouse (39-15), and Brandwag (45-12).
Meanwhile, Queen’s College and Dale College will be favourites in their matches against Pearson and St David’s Marist respectively. Queen’s (33-29) and Dale (24-19) have both beaten old rivals Selborne recently. Dale’s only loss of the season came against Glenwood (32-5) at the Kearsney Easter Festival, while Queen’s went down to Kingswood (31-17) at the Graeme College Rugby Day, and to Jeppe (41-20) at the KES Easter Festival.
On day two, the game to watch will be Queen’s against Framesby, who have only two wins from eight matches. However, Queen’s coach Dave Bolze admits Framesby are a much better side than their results show. Framesby have started their season with their most difficult fixtures, going down to unbeaten Grey College (57-6) and Glenwood (65-9), and suffering losses to Dale (46-17), Selborne (36-10), SACS (19-13) and Daniel Pienaar (31-29).
The hosts will face Windhoek Gym on the second day, while Dale College will take on competitive Welkom side Goudveld.
The festival this year will include U16, U15 and U14 teams, with 32 matches to be played each day. Usually played in March, the festival was moved to accommodate the Easter festivals.
