Outeniqua will face unbeaten Affies at Hoërskool Diamantveld in Kimberley on Saturday.
The Wildeklawer Super Schools Festival was first staged in 2009 after former Paarl Gym headmaster Basjan Reinhardt proposed the concept of a strength-versus-strength schools rugby competition, which he believed was lacking at the time. The festival, which involves only the top-ranked schools in the country, started with 12 1st-XV teams in 2009, and has grown into one of the flagship schools sport tournaments in South Africa.
The 2016 edition of the festival sees 20 of the best schools battle it out over two days as they look to claim bragging rights and settle in for the remainder of the season.
Affies will hope to continue their strong run of form this season when they take on Outeniqua on day one. The Pretoria side has picked up six wins from six this season, including wins over Parktown Boys’ (49-7), Nelspruit (38-0) and Paul Roos (24-17) at the St John’s Easter Festival. They followed that up with big wins over Westville (62-0) and Diamantveld (64-17), having opened their season with a thumping 58-12 win over Helpmekaar.
Outeniqua have recorded four wins from six matches this season, including victories over Tygerberg (69-5), Brackenfell (17-3) and Waterkloof (10-3) at the North-South tournament, and Drostdy (17-8) last weekend. They lost their opening game of the North-South tournament 35-24 to hosts Garsfontein and suffered a last-minute 29-27 defeat to Paarl Boys’ two weeks ago.
In other matches at the festival, Paarl Boys’ take on Waterkloof as they look to extend their winning streak to 28 games, while Garsfontein aim to halt Grey College, who have six wins from six matches, including two against HTS Louis Botha (50-0) and Sentraal (57-3) that were ended early once Grey reached 50 points.
Paul Roos clash with HTS Middelburg, Paarl Gym take on Menlopark and hosts Diamantveld meet Boland Landbou in the final match on day one.
On day two, Affies and Paarl Boys’ are set for a top-of-the-rankings clash. Both sides head into the tournament with six wins from six and are expected to win their opening matches against Outeniqua and Waterkloof respectively.
Oakdale, who have nine wins from nine matches this season, take on Grey College in another big game on day two.
