Affies beat Hilton 17-6, while there were also wins for Helpmekaar, Paarl Boys’, Parktown, Paul Roos and hosts St John’s at their annual festival.
In the game of the day, Affies came out on top in a tight tussle against Hilton. The Pretoria-based side dominated from the outset, but stubborn defence by Hilton meant their early dominance was fruitless.
The pressure would eventually take its toll on Hilton as Affies scored two quick tries for commanding 14-point lead, but before the break Hilton cut the deficit to 14-6 through the reliable boot of fullback Gareth Schreuder.
The second half was evenly poised and when Affies conceded a yellow card because of foul play, Hilton had a golden opportunity to seize control of the match. But Affies’ defence, despite the handicap, held firm to keep Hilton scoreless.
And as soon as they were back to their full complement, Affies added three points to their tally to seal the victory.
Earlier in the day, Helpmekaar lashed St John’s (Harare) 64-3, Paarl Boys’ High tamed the Eye of the Tiger Academy 57-0 and Parktown Boys’ defeated the Combined High School XV from Australia 26-19.
In the penultimate game of the day, Paul Roos thumped Nelpruit 44-6, before St John’s concluded the play with a 20-13 victory over Florida.
