Centre Marnus Potgieter scored a hat-trick as Affies crushed Maritzburg College 59-7 in Saturday’s Premier Interschools match in Pietermaritzburg. MARIETTE ADAMS reports.
As the scoreline suggests, it was one-way traffic at Goldstones Field with Affies running in nine tries. College’s poor ball protection and handling, combined with their appalling defending, proved to be their undoing.
Several Affies players were in sublime form, including Potgieter, captain Schalk Erasmus, who scored a double, and flyhalf Ruan de Swardt, the school’s only representative in the SA Schools squad.
But no one had a more impressive game than flanker Phillip Krause, son of former Springbok loose forward Piet. Krause made nine tackles, 11 carries and eight tackle busts, and his strong offloading game led to four of Affies’ tries. He rightfully earned the Man of the Match award.
Five first-half tries by wings Ruben Meiring and Carl Koch, Erasmus, Potgieter and prop James Combrinck gave Affies a commanding 31-0 lead at the break.
The visitors weren’t at their best at the start of the second half and conceded an early yellow card. The one-man advantage helped College to finally break their duck, to the delight of the crowd, who celebrated wildly when scrumhalf Lodewyk Muller scored.
But Affies struck back despite being a man down. Combrinck, who was an early first-half replacement because of injury, rounded off his second try, before a quick-fire double saw Potgieter complete his hat-trick.
Maritzburg enjoyed more possession and territory in the latter stages of the game and pressed hard for a second try. But like so often in the game, they just couldn’t execute properly. A loose pass that didn’t go to hand was picked up by Erasmus who cantered in to complete the rout.
