Paarl Boys’ remain unbeaten, but Boland Landbou played their part in making their derby one of the most memorable BestMed Schools Rugby Premier Division matches of the season.
Paarl Boys’, the No 1-ranked school in South Africa, won 38-33 in a thrilling exhibition of skilful rugby.
Landbou, who had beaten Paarl Gym earlier in the season, came close to beating their other Paarl rivals.
But although Landbou delighted with their all-round play, there would be no victory as Boishaai, who have been imposing against all-comers in the last three seasons, again found that something special in the big moments.
Both coaching teams described the match as an advertisement for the quality of Western Cape schoolboy rugby.
There was also wonderful rugby played in the two southern suburbs traditional ‘big four’ derbies. SACS were powerful in a convincing 37-20 win against Wynberg Boys’ High and Rondebosch Boys’ High stunned Bishops with 22 unanswered second-half points to win 32-19.
Only 400m separate the two famous schoolboy institutions, and very little separated the two teams for the first hour, with Bishops leading 19-15. Rondebosch, who did the double over Bishops in 2016, again saved their best for the last quarter in scoring three tries.
SACS, who have lost only once this season, were always in command at home against their rivals. The hosts scored five tries to three and consolidated their position as the in-form southern suburbs team of 2017.
SACS captain Vusile Dlepu, who is also the Western Province Craven Week captain, again proved influential and inspirational, with the midfield combination of Chad van der Loo and Jordy Hop accounting for 27 points.
