Paarl Boys’ beat Paul Roos 28-3 in Stellenbosch on Saturday to extend their winning run to 32 games. TYRONE ENGEL reports.
Boishaai led just 8-3 at the break, but ran away with the game in the second half as they scored three unanswered tries.
Paarl Boys’ made an electric start to the match when inside centre Hanri van Heerden sliced open the Paul Roos defence and raced in for the opening try. Fullback Gianni Lombard was unable to convert from the touchline.
Boishaai continued to dominate as they pinned Paul Roos in their half early on. But the hosts got on the scoreboard when fullback Joshua Vermeulen slotted a penalty goal after great work at the breakdown by their forwards from the lineout.
The rest of the half was packed with penalties as neither side managed to gain the upper hand. Lombard slotted a late penalty to give Boishaai a five-point lead at the break.
The visitors were first on the board after the restart as right wing Urgene Johannes collected the offload from Lombard to score an unconverted try in the right-hand corner.
Lombard then kicked a penalty to put his side ahead by 13 points, before replacement prop MJ Strauss latched on to an offload from replacement flyhalf Tiaan du Plessis, after Du Plessis had collected his own kick ahead, to score.
Flank Francke Horn then collected a clever inside pass from scrumhalf and Man of the Match Michael Visser to run in Boishaai’s fourth try to complete a comprehensive victory.
Paul Roos – Penalty: Joshua Vermeulen.
Paarl Boys’ – Tries: Hanri van Heerden, Urgene Johannes, MJ Strauss, Francke Horn. Conversions: Gianni Lombard. Penalty: Lombard (2).
