Paarl Boys’ beat Helpmekaar 24-17, while there were also wins for Parktown, Affies Hilton, St John’s and Paul Roos at the St John’s Easter Festival on Saturday.
Paarl Boys’ came from behind to beat Helpmekaar and extend their unbeaten record to 23 matches.
Boishaai fullback Gianni Lombard traded penalties with Helpmekaar fullback Chuiner van Rooyen and flyhalf Tristan Oosthuizen as the sides were locked at 6-6 after 17 minutes. Scrumhalf Ruhan Viviers scored on the stroke of half-time to give Helpmekaar an 11-6 lead.
SA Schools centre Manuel Ras scored the first try for Paarl Boys’ early in the second half to level the scores, before Van Rooyen kicked another penalty to put Helpmekaar back in front.
Lombard then converted Thaakir Abrahams’s try to give Boishaai the lead for the first time after 43 minutes. Van Rooyen slotted another kick at goal, but two more Lombard penalties gave Paarl Boys’ the win.
In Saturday’s other matches, Parktown Boys’ beat Italian side Viadana 39-12, Affies thrashed Nelspruit 38-0, Hilton College edged the Lions Invitational side 18-15, the hosts beat the St John’s Harare 23-15, and Paul Roos held on to beat Monument 14-11.
