Three standout players at the Kearsney Easter Festival received Sharks Academy bursaries for 2017.
Kearsney hosted a successful ninth edition of their Easter festival, which culminated in the awarding of three bursaries to the Sharks Academy valued at R100,000 each. The bursaries include a contract with the academy in 2017, accommodation and a tuition bursary with one of its education partners.
The recipients were Glenwood prop Renier van Rooyen, Dale College fullback Aphelele Fassi and Dale centre Sibulele Mbana. Both schools impressed at the festival, and faced off on the final day with the Green Machine winning 32-5.
Sharks Academy managing director Etienne Fynn said he was impressed by the standard of rugby on display at this year’s festival.
‘Even though there were some high-scoring matches, this was more about the quality of play than that the teams had been mismatched,’ Fynn said. ‘We believe that a player who shines at school doesn’t necessarily have the attributes to play senior rugby, but we believe these three boys will meet those requirements.’
