MARIETTE ADAMS chats to the talented Noord-Kaap fullback-wing.
HUFKE ON …
HIS EARLY YEARS
‘I grew up in Ceres in the Boland, where my family still lives. I went to Bella Vista Primary until Grade 7, but because I was too young for high school I had to transfer to Morrisdale, the only primary school in the area offering Grade 8 at the time. In my last year at Bella Vista, I made the Boland U13 squad, and from that moment I knew I wanted to play rugby professionally.’
HOW HE STARTED PLAYING RUGBY
‘There was a dust pitch where all the kids would play cricket, rugby or soccer. No one wanted me on their cricket or soccer team because I wasn’t very good, but because I scored a lot of tries in the rugby matches, some of the bigger kids encouraged me to join the school’s U11 team. Two years later I was selected for Boland U13.’
HIS ATHLETICS SUCCESS
‘Last year, I ran personal best times of 10.91sec and 22.66sec in the 100m and 200m at the Hartswater T20 Athletic Championship, which is the provincial schools tournament in the Northern Cape. This year I clocked 10.45sec over 100m and 21.50sec over 200m at Noord-Kaap’s interhouse athletics day.’
HOW PLAYING FOR SA SCHOOLS A HELPED HIS DEVELOPMENT
‘I had a couple of one-on-one sessions with coach Sean Erasmus. I learned a few valuable things from him and felt that I returned to Noord-Kaap a better player.’
HIS GOALS FOR 2017
‘In 2015, I set the record for most tries in a single season for Noord-Kaap when I scored 18 in 15 matches. I want to break that record this year. I also hope to maintain a kicking success rate of above 80%, and be a captain who leads from the front.’
SIGNING A JUNIOR CONTRACT WITH THE BULLS
‘I’m honoured to get such recognition from a top union. I know I’ll have to work hard, but hopefully I can develop my all-round skills and attributes there.’

DEON CARNEY (NOORD-KAAP 1st XV)
‘Cameron is a vital player for us, with unbelievable talent. The things he does on the field are quite extraordinary. What sets him apart from many of his teammates is his vision and ability to assess the situation in front of him, and he has also taken over the kicking duties. I genuinely believe Cameron has the skills and the mindset to play rugby at a higher level.’
