MARIETTE ADAMS looks at Kearsney’s captain and No 8.
RICHARDSON ON …
HOW HE STARTED PLAYING RUGBY
‘I was an avid football fan and played in the junior ranks of a local club. It was only when I got to Kloof Senior Primary in Grade 4 that I had to play rugby. And from there the sport grew on me. I fancy myself as
a decent footballer, though.’
BEING APPOINTED KEARSNEY CAPTAIN
‘We used to go watch most of Kearsney’s home games, and I remember playing behind the white wall at the field and dreaming I would get an opportunity to attend the school and play for their 1st XV. I never imagined being captain; I was stunned when I found out. It’s an honour to be in this position and my greatest achievement.’
BALANCING ACADEMICS AND SPORT
‘It’s tough, especially now that I’m captain of the 1st XV and have extra classes as preparation for the matric exams. But being at a prestigious school such as Kearsney, where the staff are always willing to help and give advice, has made it a lot easier. I’ve known since junior school that I wanted to play professional rugby, so schoolwork hasn’t always been my top priority, no matter how many times teachers and my parents tried to convince me otherwise. That was until I came to Kearsney, where it was instilled in me that no matter how talented you are in sport, academics should always be the first priority, and I know one day I’ll look back and be thankful to the school for that.’
GOALS FOR 2017
‘Kearsney started the season well and I hope we’ll continue to do so throughout the year. Personally, I want to develop as a player and leader. I hope to make the KwaZulu-Natal Craven Week and SA Schools squads. Academically, my aim is to get distinctions in most of my subjects.’
RUGBY PLAYERS WHO INSPIRE HIM
‘Dan and Jean-Luc du Preez. I was in Grade 5 when I started following their progress, and in my first year at Kearsney the twins were in matric. They inspire me and my dream is to share a field with them one day.’
