Paarl Gym defeated Paul Roos 28-24 in their Premier Interschools match in Paarl on Saturday. MARIETTE ADAMS reports.
Both teams came into this contest brimming with confidence. Gimmies had beaten city rivals Boland Landbou 34-19 last weekend while Paul Roos thumped Grey High 36-21.
Gimmies, however, played the better rugby on the day despite both teams scoring four tries. The Maroon Machine from Stellenbosch failed to protect the ball in contact throughout the game and made numerous unforced errors, which aided Gym’s cause.
Scrumhalf Zak Burger, captain of Gym, and his opposite number Tiaan Coetzee both scored a brace of tries, but it was bulky No 8 Muller Uys’s superb performance that earned him the Man of the Match award.
Burger led from the front with the opening score, which flyhalf Theo Boshoff converted, but No 8 Bruce Coetzee wriggled his way over the tryline to equalise.
Before the end of the first half, a second converted try put the hosts ahead and to add to Paul Roos’s woes, star fullback Joshua Vermeulen was forced to leave the field with an injury.
The second half was just as scrappy as the first, but Paul Roos narrowed the deficit to two with an unconverted effort.
The Gimmies forwards, though, continued to dominate the physical battle after the restart and the relentless pressure took its toll on Paul Roos, who conceded a high number of penalties.
Tries by Burger and Uys doubled Gym’s lead and although Paul Roos showed excellent resilience with two further tries of their own, they were made to rue captain and SA Schools flyhalf Damian Willemse’s two failed conversion attempts.
Paarl Gymnasium – Tries: Zak Burger (2), André Boshoff, Muller Uys. Conversions: Theo Boshoff (4).
Paul Roos – Tries: Tiaan Coetzee (2), Bruce Coetzee, Aidon Topley. Conversions: Damian Willemse (2).
