Golden Lions No 8 Travis Gordon will captain SA Schools against Wales in Stellenbosch on Friday.
Gordon has been appointed as team captain for the entire international series, while centre Rikus Pretorius was named vice-captain.
Fullback Kennedy Mpeku and wings Qamani Kota and Muller du Pleases will form the back three, Pretorius and Diego Appollis will start in the midfield, while Christopher Schreuder and Sanele Nohamba are at flyhalf and scrumhalf respectively.
In the pack, Gordon, Phendulani Buthelezi and Vian Fourie form the loose trio, Christen van Niekerk and JJ van Mescht are the lock pairing and props Keagan Glade and Nkosikhona Masuka, and hooker Ruhann Greyling will start in the front row.
In line with the competition rules, coach Lance Sendin named 13 replacements, although only eight will be allowed to take to the field. The sides will be allowed rolling substitutions, which will be limited to 12 rotations.
‘We selected the player combinations which we thought gelled well, based on what we saw at training in the last few days,’ said Sendin.
‘Wales are always tough customers. They usually have a well-balanced side with big forwards and skilled backs, so we are expecting a physical encounter, while we will also be tested on defence. We need to be well-prepared to counter their strengths.’
