Captain Austin Brummer scored a last-gasp try as Glenwood clinched a thrilling 33-26 win over Maritzburg College at Goldstones on Saturday. CRAIG LEWIS reports.
Glenwood came into the clash after suffering a disappointing 63-0 defeat to Affies, and coach Rudi Dames said in the buildup that they expected to face a fired-up and physical College side, who were playing their final game of the season.
This certainly proved to be the case, with both sides trading metaphoric blows throughout the encounter, as illustrated by the fact that the scores remained deadlocked at 26-26 heading into the latter stages.
Glenwood led by just two points at the break, and then fell behind 26-23 in the second stanza, but the boot of Martin Holtzhausen (who slotted three conversions and four penalties) kept them in the clash heading into the tense final stages.
A draw looked to be on the cards when Holtzhausen landed his fourth penalty of the afternoon, but in the final minute, Brummer delivered when it mattered most with a match-winning try under the posts that salvaged a hard-fought win for the visitors.
Glenwood will now turn their attention to next weekend’s clash with Grey College knowing that a vast improvement will be required if they are to produce a competitive showing in their final match of the season.
