Grey College maintained their winning streak this season and ended Paarl Gym’s run with a 31-19 win at the Wildeklawer Super Schools Festival on Monday. MARIETTE ADAMS reports.
The highly anticipated clash between two of only three undefeated schools in the top 10 of Rugby365’s rankings (KES are the third side to have won all their games) lived up to its billing as they scored a combined seven tries.
Gym came into this match as the No 1-ranked side in the country, while Grey were fourth. But on Monday, the youngsters from Bloemfontein delivered a dominant display to end Gym’s seven-match winning streak this year. The result also extends Grey’s winning start in the campaign to seven.
Hooker Chris Rossouw, son of former Bok Chris Rossouw Snr, scored the opening try for Paarl Gym. But Grey, through forward dominance, quickly sped to a 17-5 lead via converted tries from wing Henk Cilliers, No 8 Arno Nieuwoudt, and a penalty.
Despite all their struggles, Gimmies struck either side of the break to take a two-point lead. But that is as good as it got for them.
Grey frustrated Gym with solid defence on the tryline, before hitting them on the counter. This allowed scrumhalf Ross Braude to extend their advantage 24-19.
No 15 Dawid Kriel, who had a sterling game from the back, then latched on to the ball, and with a brilliant running line scored under the posts to seal the victory for Grey.
Grey College – Tries: Henk Cilliers, Arno Nieuwoudt, Ross Braude, Dawid Kriel. Conversions: Christopher Schreuder (4). Penalty: Schreuder.
Paarl Gym – Tries: Chris Rossouw, Ryno Beukes, Corne Uys. Conversions: Daniel Beukes (2).
