Western Province beat the Pumas 28-19 on day one of the U13 Craven Week at Paarl Gym, while there were also wins for the Griffons, Blue Bulls, Valke, Griquas, KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo Blue Bulls.
WP, who finished as the top team last year, scored three tries in nine minutes in the first half to lead 21-5 at half-time. Outside centre Keagan Smith opened the scoring in the 10th minute before fullback Hakeem Kunene and left wing Jade Filanie also added their names to the scoresheet. Right wing Reece Montsumi converted all three tries. Pumas prop Hanru Jansen got his side on the scoreboard with an unconverted try just before the half-time whistle.
The Pumas continued their fightback in the second half and scored two converted tries in six minutes, through eighthman Pieter Willem Voges and hooker Joshua Johnston, to trail by just two points with 11 minutes to play. But Smith then scored his second converted try with six minutes to go to put the game beyond the Pumas.
