SARugbymag.co.za chats to Paarl Gymnasium 1st XV coach Pieter Rossouw about the upcoming season.
How have you prepared for the 2016 season?
Pre-season for us has just been about working on the boys’ fitness and conditioning before and after the holiday break. And I believe that preparation is sufficient for schools rugby.
What lessons did you learn from last season?
I wasn’t involved last year as I was with the Bulls then. I prefer not to look at past results, but to focus on what lies ahead. There’s been a change in coaching staff and players and together we’ll face different challenges to the group of last year.
What are your goals for the team this year?
That my players are equally competitive in all our games, regardless of who the opposition team is and that we play a brand of rugby all Gimmies supporters enjoy.
How many players from last year’s 1st XV will play again this year?
We have three players returning: flyhalf Wian van Zyl, scrumhalf Zak Burger and No 8 Muller Uys.
Who will be your key players?
We can’t built our season around individual players, rugby is a team sport and the entire Paarl Gym squad will have a role to play. Injuries are part of the game and we’ll need those waiting in the wings to step up when it is required.
What will be your biggest game of the season?
Every game Paarl Gym play in is a big one, but the interschools derby against Paarl Boys’ is the pinnacle for everyone involved.
