Centre Henry Pike scored a hat-trick as EG Jansen crushed Menlopark 71-28 in the quarter-finals of the Beeld Trophy Macro Schools competition on Saturday. MARIETTE ADAMS reports.
Jansies’ progression to the semi-finals means they will next face Waterkloof, who edged HTS Middelburg 43-39 in their last-eight tie.
EG Jansen pride themselves on their lethal attacking approach and on Saturday that ruthlessness saw them outscore Menlopark 11 tries to four, which included Pike’s hat-trick and a brace each by flyhalf Ruben Beytel and left wing Dwayne Fourie.
The hosts were rampant from the get-go, running in six first-half tries (and five conversions) to lead 40-21 at the break.
The second half was even more one-sided than the first, with EG Jansen adding 31 points to their tally, while they conceded only seven. Scrumhalf Ginter Smuts kicked three more conversions to finish with a 16-point haul.
Elsewhere, Garsfontein thrashed Rustenburg 46-14, keeping alive their hopes of successfully defending the title. Garsies’ semi-final opponents Monument laboured to a 25-21 victory over Nelspruit at home.
In the Big Schools division, defending champions Helpmekaar cruised to a 30-17 win over Oos-Moot, Lichtenburg outlasted Pietersburg for a 43-36 win, Vereeniging whacked Linden 55-0 and Ligbron caused an upset with a 25-13 triumph against Ben Vorster.
