Centre Yanga Hlalu scored a hat-trick as the Golden Lions beat Border 44-8 at the U18 Craven Week on Monday.
The Lions made a sloppy start to the match, with Border lock Stephan Nieuwenhuizen bursting over for the opening try after selling a dummy, breaking the line and then shrugging off two attempted tacklers.
Fullback Boniang Mpeku got the Lions on the board with a penalty goal, before breaks down the blindside by wing David Cary and Mpeku helped set up a try to scrumhalf Tinus Combrinck.
Border, though, continued to dominate possession and were unlucky not to score a try when lock Morné Coetzee was held up over the line after a great break by winger Sibabalwe Xamlashe.
Border attacked from the 5m scrum and were awarded a penalty, only to miss the kick at goal. However, they were successful with another attempt to level the scores at 8-8.
The Lions then struck from a scrum inside their half. Cary raced down the right wing and his inside pass put Hlalu away for his first try.
The Lions made a good start to the second half when Cary scored out wide after a flurry of pick and gos.
Hlalu would score his side’s next two tries. First, he was put away by left wing Tyer Hayward, and then he picked up the loose ball, which had been lost by Border flyhalf David Coetzer in the tackle, and raced 60m to score.
Four minutes later, and a Border knock-on resulted in a try to Mpeku.
Lock Stephan le Roux then completed the rout after centre Muzilikazi Manyike had cut back from a 5m scrum.
Border pushed hard for a consolation try in the final moments but were penalised on the Lions’ tryline.
