Centre Wandisile Simelane scored 29 points as the Golden Lions beat SWD 59-26 at the U18 Craven Week on Tuesday. TYRONE ENGEL reports.
The Lions ran riot in the first half to lead 40-12 at the break, and while SWD put up a better fight in the second half, they still conceded another four tries.
Hooker Asenathi Nthlabkanye opened the scoring for the Lions in the fifth minute when he crashed over after sustained pressure close to SWD’s tryline, with Simelane adding the extras.
The Lions continued the carnage as they ran in four more tries through flank Mark Snyman, Simelane (two) and flyhalf Tyrone Green to lead 33-0 after just 21 minutes.
SWD scored an unconverted try in the 24th minute as No 8 Lance Lambrecht went over from a strong scum on the Lions 5m line, before Simelane crossed for his hat-trick.
The Young Eagles hit back with a converted try from flank Willem van Heerden, who powered his way over from close range, and drew first blood after the restart when Darren Adonis scored a self-converted try. The fullback split the Lions’ defence after running a brilliant line to collect a pass from the back of the scrum.
But the Lions hit back immediately with Green stepping his way to the tryline to score his second try. Fullback Chuiner van Rooyen then cantered in for a converted try after good backline hands from an attacking scrum.
SWD scored their fourth try when prop André Posthumus forced his way over from close range, but the Lions had the last say with scrumhalf Tinus Combrinck darting over for a converted try.
