Paarl Boys’ fullback Gianni Lombard scored all his side’s points as they beat Affies 29-25 on day two of the Wildeklawer Super Schools Festival. TYRONE ENGEL reports.
In an evenly contested match between the top-two ranked teams in the country, Lombard proved the difference as Boishaai, who led 19-11 at the break, held on for their 29th consecutive win.
Lombard opened the scoring with an early penalty goal, before Affies flyhalf Ruan de Swardt slotted a well-struck drop goal. Lombard added two more penalties, with De Swardt kicking a penalty of his own.
Lombard then showed some great skill on attack as he stepped his way through the Affies defence to score the first try of the match. He converted to give Boishaai a 16-6 lead.
Affies hit back with a try through centre Marnus Potgieter, but another Lombard penalty put the Paarl side in front by eight points at half-time.
Affies scored the first points of the second half as hooker Schalk Erasmus went over from a strong lineout drive and De Swardt added the extras to make it a one-point game.
Lombard slotted two more penalties before scoring his second try as he collected his delicate chip-kick and stepped through the Affies defence to go over in the right-hand corner.
Affies then scored a second try from a lineout drive through prop Cabous Eloff, and De Swardt converted to reduce the deficit to just four points with six minutes to play. Affies went in search of the winning score, but Boishaai were resolute in defence.
Earlier on day two, Grey College beat Oakdale 48-23 after trailing 16-7 at half-time. The Free State powerhouse ran in six second-half tries to remain unbeaten in eight matches this season, with Oakdale suffering their first defeat in 10 matches in 2016.
Selborne bounced back from a 3-3 draw against Monument on Saturday to crush Louis Botha 60-10, scoring eight tries to one.
Paul Roos beat Menlopark 32-5, Paarl Gym claimed a comfortable 38-22 win against EG Jansen, and hosts Diamantveld beat HTS Middelburg 22-17 to finish the festival as the only other unbeaten side.
