Maritzburg College beat Wynberg Boys’ 29-28 on day two of the Wynberg Rugby Festival. TYRONE ENGEL reports.
Wynberg led 20-19 at the break, and were nine points ahead halfway through the second half, but a converted try by eighthman Craig Glover, to complete his hat-trick, and a late penalty secured the win for Maritzburg.
The hosts opened the scoring early on as flyhalf Dominic Coetzer converted his own try. Glover then went over from a lineout driving maul, with flyhalf Ruben van Blerk adding the extras to level the scores for Maritzburg.
Coetzer slotted a penalty before Glover scored his second try to give Maritzburg a 12-10 lead. Wynberg Boys’ scored two minutes later through fullback Abdul Armien to put the hosts back in front.
The lead changed hands again as Maritzburg scored a third try through winger Xolisa Guma, but not before Wynberg Boys’ scrumhalf Labib Kannemeyer scored his side’s third try to give them a one-point lead at the break.
Coetzer slotted his second penalty goal early in the second half, before converting Kannemeyer’s second try to put Wynberg Boys’ ahead 28-19.
Van Blerk converted Glover’s third try, and Maritzburg’s fourth, to close the deficit to just two points before slotting a late penalty to give the visitors the win.
In other matches on day two, Jeppe scored four second-half tries to beat Bishops 38-24, after the teams had been locked at 12-12 at the interval, to end the festival with two wins from two.
Rondebosch Boys’ fullback Sam Cragg slotted a late penalty as Bosch edged Windhoek Gym 20-18 in a tough encounter, while SACS also ended the festival unbeaten as they thrashed DF Malan 80-5, after leading 45-0 at half-time, in a 12-try rout.
