Michaelhouse put in a strong second-half performance to stun Hilton 21-17 on Saturday.
Hilton came into this KwaZulu-Natal derby as favourites, but were outplayed in the second half.
Michaelhouse lock Grant Haines opened the scoring in the first half for a 7-0 lead, but as expected Hilton responded.
The hosts had the lion’s share of possession and despite Michaelouse’s initial resilient defence, the dam wall broke and Hilton streaked in for two unanswered tries to lead 12-7 at the break.
The second half was quite the opposite. House put the pressure back on Hilton by playing at a higher tempo through their lethal backline and the hosts were unable to inject the same pace into their game.
Michaelhouse duo Luke Versveld (outside centre) and Kyle Thompson (inside centre) wreaked havoc in midfield and were both rewarded with tries, while the reliable boot of flyhalf William Glassock made sure all the visitors’ tries were converted.
Hilton did add a five-pointer to their tally in the second half, but it was unconverted and they didn’t have any other scoring opportunities.
In the other match in KZN, Kearsney beat St Charles 52-6 in Botha’s Hill.
Hilton – TBC
Michaelhouse – Tries: Grant Haines, Luke Versveld, Kyle Thompson. Conversions: William Glassock (3).
