Daniel Beukes kicked a conversion five minutes into stoppage time to hand Paarl Gimnasium a 35-33 win over Affies in Saturday’s Interschools clash in Paarl.
In an energy-sapping, 10-try thriller in Paarl, both sides crossed for five tries, with one conversion separating them in the end.
Affies looked to have snatched victory just before full-time, when wing Ruben Meiring sliced through the Gimmies defence for a converted try to put them 33-28 up. But there was still time for another restart, and Gim used it to their advantage.
The hosts mounted an 11-phase attack on the tryline, but couldn’t break down Affies’ defence. The visitors were then reduced to 14 after James Combrinck was given his marching orders for a cynical infringement. From that point, Gimmies bashed away at the line, resulting in a score-equaling try by lock Adriaan Ludick, before Beukes nailed the match-winning conversion.
Earlier in the contest, the hosts raced out to a 21-7 lead, courtesy of a brace by captain Muller du Plessis and one from Beukes, but Affies reduced the gap to 21-19 at half-time.
The see-saw battle continued into the second half. Both teams added a converted try to their tallies as Gimmies retained their two-point lead, which set up the grandstand finish. But despite the dramatic twists, Paarl Gim did enough to win at home.
