Winger Junior Nthlane scored a last-minute try to give Parktown Boys a dramatic 31-25 win against St John’s College on Saturday.
The hosts looked to have this Classic Clash wrapped up when they led 25-24 with two minutes to go and were awarded a scrum 5m out from Parktown’s tryline. But they turned over possession, and while they got the ball back, they lost it again and this time they were punished, with Nthlane racing away to score the match-winner.
Parktown had led 17-8 at the break, but trailed for most of the second half before snatching victory.
Parktown flyhalf Ethan Anderson and opposite number Kieran Houlston exchanged early penalties, before a clever kick into space by Anderson was collected by Nthlane, who scored his first try. St John’s then hit back when inside centre Quintus Kilbourn broke through a tackle to go over for a try.
Parktown showed great skill and determination with ball in hand and they were rewarded in the 30th minute as scrumhalf Matthew van Huyssteen went over for a try from up close. Anderson converted to put Parktown ahead 17-8 at half-time.
Kilbourn scored his second try soon after the break, and St John’s then took a 22-17 lead when their captain, hooker Sibiya Sibiya, crossed the line.
Houlston slotted a long-range penalty to extend the lead to eight points, but Parktown got themselves right back into the game when centre Thando Mabasa scored a converted try.
Then came the thrilling finish that saw Parktown counter-attack from inside their 22 and score a try at the other end of the field.
