The longest running schools rugby festival in South Africa has four new entrants this year.
When St Stithians staged their first rugby festival back in 1984, it was the only one of its kind. The event has since grown into a much bigger festival, with a variety of sport codes on offer. For its 34th anniversary, the event has been renamed from the Easter Sports Festival to the Saints Sports Festival, to include both the Prep school and the College in the festivities.
Four new teams have been added to the lineup – Bishops, Clifton, Pretoria Boys’ and Westville have made way for Maritzburg, SACS, St Benedict’s and St David’s. Grey High’s attendance makes them the only top 20-ranked school at the 2017 event. St Alban’s will only be able to compete on the first two days, with their slot on day three given to Pretoria Tech High.
MATCHES TO WATCH
Traditional rivals St Andrew’s take on St David’s in the first game at the festival, SACS face Michaelhouse later in the afternoon, while Grey High and Westville close out day one.
Grey High square off against Maritzburg in what should be a quality match on day two. The last day will be headlined by the clash between hosts St Stithians and Maritzburg.
