Centre Chad van der Loo bagged a brace for SACS, who beat Wynberg 37-20 on Saturday.
Given little or no chance of beating the in-form SACS, Wynberg did well to stay in the contest despite a slow start. But in the end, SACS were just too strong for their arch-rivals.
The first quarter of the game was well-contested, with Wynberg’s David Botha and SACS’ Jordy Hop trading penalties for a 3-3 scoreline. It would be SACS who landed the first blow after Hop sparked an attack inside his own half. The outside centre ran at Wynberg’s defence before perfecting a miracle back-flick pass to his wing Ben Mazzullo, who made a clean break and then offloaded the ball back to Hop. With one man to beat, Hop chipped the ball over the top and it bounced kindly for No 8 Oliver Schuurmans to score.
The hosts scored again through Van der Loo, but Wynberg No 8 Cameron Bowes ran an intercept try in to narrow the gap to 15-8 at half-time.
SACS seized control early in the second half by scoring 17 unanswered points, but Wynberg added another converted try to their tally, to trail by 17 points.
With just under 10 minutes remaining, Van der Loo completed his double for the hosts, but Wynberg had the final say when captain Christian Colborne crashed over in the dying moments for a consolation effort.
