St John’s beat Gauteng rivals St Benedicts 21-19 at home on Saturday.
In a close encounter in Johannesburg, the home side fought back from 12-11 down at half-time to win their final game of the season.
St Benedicts flyhalf and captain Keegan Marengo got the visitors on the board with two early penalty kicks. St John’s flyhalf Kieran Houlston replied with a penalty of his own, before Marengo slotted his third.
St Benedicts’ lead was reduced to just one point as fullback Tshep Chipu scored the hosts’ first try. Houlston was unable to add the extras. Marengo then kicked a drop goal before Houlston kicked a second penalty goal to see the visitors lead 12-11 at the break.
Both sides managed a converted try in the second half, but it was a third penalty from Houlston that gave the hosts a two-point win.
