The Golden Lions, KwaZulu-Natal, Blue Bulls, Boland, Griquas, SWD and Leopards recorded victories on day one of the U16 Grant Khomo Week at Paarl Gym.
The Lions thrashed Free State 50-15, after leading 21-10 at half-time. Lions No 8 Tristan Dullisear scored a converted try in the 15th minute to level the scores after Free State No 8 Ben Vorster had opened the scoring three minutes earlier. Lions scrumhalf Zihan Coetzee and wing Munashe Chaitezwi crossed the line late in the first half to give them the lead at the break.
The Lions continued to dominate after the restart, with centre and captain Muzilikazi Manyike scoring tries. Flyhalf Dean Lategan scored his side’s fifth try in the 50th minute, before the Lions added three more tries in seven minutes through fullback Campwill Willemse, Dullisear and prop Neo Pheko.
Meanwhile, scrumhalf Jaden Hendrikse scored 21 points (five conversions, two penalties and a try) as KwaZulu-Natal crushed the Pumas 51-7. KZN led 10-0 at half-time thanks to a converted try by flyhalf Dylan Pretorius and a penalty from Hendrikse.
KZN then ran in six second-half tries through No 8 Celimpilo Gumede, hooker Jhaques Thyssen, centre and captain Rynhardt Jonker, flank Runako Brynard, Hendrikse and replacement prop Jordan Clarke.
In other significant results, inside centre Diego Appollis scored a hat-trick while lock Divan Venter and hooker Janco Uys each scored a brace, as the Blue Bulls smashed the Limpopo Blue Bulls 62-15; Boland outside centre Adrian Derrick Maans’s last-minute try gave Boland a 20-12 win against Western Province; and flank Salmon Oberholzer kicked a late penalty goal to hand Griquas a 13-12 win against Eastern Province.
Scrumhalf Estian Heyneke scored 18 points (two tries, four conversions) in the Leopards’ 38-11 win against Border; wing Brandon Addams scored a brace of tries as the Boland XV beat the Valke 34-24; and Zimbabwe ran in six unanswered tries to beat Border Country Districts 41-0.
