Griquas centre Dean Ackermann’s act of selflessness in their 78-5 win over Zimbabwe attracted attention on Wednesday, writes MARIETTE ADAMS.
Left winger Cameron Huffke set the field alight with four tries and nine conversions for a 38-point haul, while the blockbusting inside centre cantered in for a modest brace in comparison. Yet Ackermann edged out his teammate, who was also nominated, to be crowned Hero of the Day.
After scoring his brace and with the win already secured for Griquas, Ackermann cut through the Zimbabwe defence with a scintillating run three minutes from full-time. With the tryline at his mercy and the alluring possibility of a rare hat-trick at Craven Week, the centre handed the ball over to fullback Ashwill Botha to score instead.
‘He has been wanting to score since Monday and we had a fight moments earlier, so I thought let me grant him his wish to make up and keep him quiet,’ said Ackermann jokingly. ‘The team and my teammates always come first.
‘I’m super stoked to be at playing at Craven Week and I feel honoured for getting the Hero of the Day award.
‘It was a team effort today and all the boys played well to make this a comprehensive victory.’
