The Golden Lions beat KwaZulu-Natal 23-14 on the opening day of the U13 Craven Week at Grey College in Bloemfontein.
The young Lions were in the ascendancy early on, but KZN put up a valiant fight in the second half.
The Lions’ constructive attacking play and ability to get over the advantage line allowed them to score two tries and take a 16-7 lead into half-time. Each team was only able to add a try to their score in the second half.
Meanwhile, Western Province were in fine form as they crushed the Griffons 71-0. Province’s forwards laid a solid foundation upfront and their backs showed their class out wide, paving the way for an 11-try win, with winger Ken Tchimanga running in four tries.
The Blue Bulls secured a 45-12 victory against hosts Free State, with flank Tiaan Engelbrecht scoring four of his team’s seven tries.
Zimbabwe defeated Border CD 41-0, after leading 22-0 at half-time, and finished with seven tries.
No 8 Luvuyo Nkomphela bagged a hat-trick to set up a 32-15 win for Eastern Province against the Leopards, while the Limpopo Blue Bulls survived a massive scare to come away with a thrilling 15-14 triumph over Boland.
Pin-point goal-kicking earned Border an 18-15 victory against the Pumas, SWD defeated Valke 17-14 in a gripping match, and Griquas flyhalf Theunis Hohls kicked three penalty goals to secure a 21-19 victory against Namibia.
