Bishops scrumhalf Harry Makin missed a last-minute penalty as Rondebosch Boys’ won 15-14 at home on Saturday. TYRONE ENGEL reports.
Makin had the chance to snatch victory for the visitors, after Rondebosch fullback Mike Mavovana had scored a late try to put the hosts in front. But the pressure proved too much for the scrumhalf as his kick sailed just wide of the left-hand upright.
Rondebosch took an early lead in this Cape derby when wing Dane Stevens collected his own kick ahead to dot down. Centre Van der Bijl Blake added the extras.
Rondebosch enjoyed more of the possession in the first half and had the upper hand in the set pieces, with much of the latter stages of the first stanza being played in Bishops’ half. But neither side were able to add to their score before half-time.
Bishops drew first blood in the second half as lock Luke Viljoen burst through a tackle to score under the posts. Makin’s conversion levelled matters.
The visitors then went ahead when winger Seb Prentice scored their second converted try after a clever set move from a scrum.
Rondebosch finally added to their score in the 55th minute with replacement centre Sam Cragg slotting his first attempt at goal from in front to close the deficit to four points.
Mavovana then collected flyhalf Robbie Davis’s cross-field kick to score in the corner and give his side a 15-14 lead.
In the last play of the game, Bishops were awarded a penalty, but Makin’s kick went agonisingly wide.
