An unprecedented four players received Sharks Academy bursaries at the conclusion of the Kearsney Easter Festival on Monday.
Since the inception of the event, three players have been rewarded with bursaries, but this year – the 10th annual festival – four boys were awarded with bursaries valued at over R100,000 each. The bursaries include a contract with the academy, accommodation and a tuition bursary with one of its education partners.
The recipients are eighthman Adam Mountfort and fullback Jason Raubenheimer from Selborne, centre Siphamandla Matsinya from Dale and Framesby fullback Lindsay Potgieter. The four boys will also be joined by Dale captain Aphelele Fassi, who was one of last year’s bursars, but was unable to take it up until 2018 because he was still in Grade 11 then.
Sharks Academy managing director Etienne Flynn said a great mix of schools from across the country had produced excellent rugby over the course of the festival.
‘The competition out there increases each year, so it’s a reflection of the standard of this festival that many of the schools keep returning,’ he said.
