Lubanbo Sibam scored a brace as Kingswood thumped St Andrew’s 34-22 at City Lords on Saturday. MARIETTE ADAMS reports.
While the scoreboard is not a true reflection of St Andrew’s resilient performance, Kingswood did outscore them five tries to three in front of their vocal supporters.
The opening stages of the game were highly competitive and St Andrew’s drew first blood with a powerful run in midfield off the back of a dominant scrum for a converted try.
The visitors also frustrated Kingswood on defence and it took a well-weighted chip kick, which centre Siba Mzanywa ran on to, to break St Andrew’s resistance. Flyhalf Weston Potgieter knocked over the conversion to draw his team level.
Sibam ran in his second for Kingswood, and St Andrew’s added a penalty goal to trail 19-10.
There was still time for a restart before the break and it worked in Kingswood’s favour as Matthew Takeloo scored their fourth for a commanding 26-10 advantage at the interval.
The second half was less action-packed with neither side able to add to their respective tallies until the final quarter.
Potgieter slotted a long-range penalty before outside back Lutho Nomoyi streaked in for the hosts’ final converted effort to put them 34-10 ahead.
However, a late flurry saw St Andrew’s score two tries in the space of three minutes to finish with a flourish.
