Kearsney College will welcome teams from around the country for an expanded 12-team annual festival.
The 10th annual Kearsney Rugby Festival will start on Thursday and is set to reach its biggest audience yet. Apart from the hordes in attendance at Botha’s Hill, festival organisers have confirmed all matches will be live-streamed, with professional commentary for the first time.
As has been the case in previous years, the top three standout performers will be awarded with an all-expenses paid bursary for the Sharks Academy in 2018.
The festival has been expanded from 10 to 12 teams, with four new entrants competing this year. While SACS and Maritzburg are the notable absentees from last year’s list of participants, Monument and Pretoria Boys’ from Gauteng, Drostdy from the Western Cape, and Eastern Cape representative Queen’s have been added to the lineup.
MATCHES TO WATCH
Day one sees a couple of titanic clashes, but none bigger than EG Jansen, ranked seventh in 2016, against Selborne, who were ranked 14th. The match between Monument and Dale should also be a close affair, after Monnas ended last season ranked eighth, while Dale emerged as the best school in the Eastern Cape.
On day two, hosts Kearsney will take on Framesby, but the match of the day will be between EG Jansen and Glenwood, who finished 2016 ranked 10th. The last day will be highlighted by the match between Drostdy and Pretoria Boys’, closely followed by the contest between Middelburg and Dale.
